Reading: Last week, Reader Man left a note and pointers for our readers! They have been working hard to amp up their pointer power. Readers will learn that every word, no matter how long, gets just one point! We will also use our sight words to make sure we are pointing correctly in our books.

Writing: Writers will work on adding sight words to their books and writing pattern books. These pattern books might sound like "I see a yellow leaf. I see a green leaf. etc." These books help students focus on adding descriptive words and spaces to their writing.

Math: We will continue to practice telling addition and subtraction math stories. Students will also learn about equal and not equal.

  1. Students will be working on writing numbers and showing the numbers in a drawing using activity pages from the Math Expressions book.
  2. Using activity pages from the Math Expressions book, students will tell math stories for addition and subtraction.

  1. We will be showing numbers in a ten frame. They will create the dots with bingo dotters. This is great for visualizing numbers and finding partners!

  1. Students will be building numbers and comparing them using 5-groups tiles and number cards.

Social Studies: After introducing the new social studies centers, students will have a chance to work in each center this week. Students will create building block structures of where our school community helpers work. We will create webs that describe the work of the school community helpers. Finally, students will look at an assortment of pictures, determine the problem, and decide which community helper(s) could be called to fix the problem!

Word Work: We will continue to work with here, can, we, it, and me.

October 24-28

Hello K families!

This week,  I will be doing PALS testing Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon. There will be a sub in our room but I will be just down the hall so I will be able to stop in and make sure everything is running smoothly. PALS focuses on literacy concepts/skills such as letter sounds, beginning sounds, word identification, and so on. I look forward to sharing the results of this screening with you at conferences.

ReadingThis week is the beginning of our most EXCITING reading unit yet: Super Readers! Students will learn that readers are like super heroes because they can use super reader powers. After getting their very own book bins, which contain books at the student’s reading level, they will learn about their super powers! For example, Super Readers can use pointer power to point at each word while reading a book.

Writing: Writers will make sure that they are writing their sight words correctly in their writing. What a great way to transfer our word study into writer's workshop!  They will also learn about adding descriptive words to their writing.

Math:We will finish up centers from last week and complete a monster glyph to work on shapes. Students will also get a math notebook. These notebooks will track students' math thinking and ideas. Students were very excited to learn about the plus and minus sign next week. We will be sure to practice those signs by drawing math stories in our notebooks.

Social Studies: This week, we will wrap up our interviews with different school helpers. We have learned so much about the people that work in our school and will be digging even deeper next week when we start our school study centers.

Word Work: We will continue to work with here, can, we, it, and me. We are excited to start our spelling sorts after the long weekend.

Enjoy the long weekend!

Heckrodt and the fire station

We had a great time on our field trip! We have so much to write about and loved exploring with friends.

This picture was taken from the top of the fire truck ladder. We counted as a fireman climbed...72 steps!

Reading: Now that are books are filled with labels, we will talk about going back to reread the post its while reading the book! These labels really helped tie word work and writing skills into Reader’s Workshop. Toward the end of the week, students will create puppets to act out the story for our celebration. Acting out stories is a great way for early readers to develop comprehension skills.

Writing: Our scientific writers will work on drawing zoomed in pictures to teach with even more detail in their writing. They will think about looking closely to show everything they notice about the object. Then, students will learn to add labels and sentences to their pages to teach through pictures and words. I'm sure will will have many writing ideas after visiting Heckrodt!

Math:

  • Five Finder: Students need to look quickly and be able to identify a group of five objects. They will be searching for five groups in pictures, circling them, and writing and equation to match the picture.

  • Students will create a counting book with objects for numbers 6-10.
  • Students will be given a piece of paper with an equation at the bottom. They will trace their fingers on the page to match the equation.
  • Students will roll two dice with numbers 0-5 on them. They will show the numbers using tiles and then add or subtract using the tiles.

Word Study: We will introduce sorts this week. Soon, students will be in word sorts that will support them in letter sounds and spelling. This week, we will sort food/drink pictures just to learn the routines for our sorts.  These are the sight words we have this week: it, me, here, can, & we. You can keep searching for our “old” sight words in books while you read! Click on this link for an ongoing list of our sight words.

It has been a busy and exciting week here in room 82!

First, we ventured outside to start writing like scientists.

We read with Mrs. Hixon's friends! It was fun to share with different partners.

On Friday, Grandma Sue (my grandma!) visited our classroom. She helped us make binoculars to help us look closely during writer's workshop.
